A Brief History of Washstands Although first introduced in the second half of the 18th Century it wasn't until the 1860-70s that marble was used as a more appropriate work surface. Tile and marble backs arrived very shortly afterwards and by 1890's towel rails and occasionally shaving mirrors were added. Placed upon the marble top would be a jug and bowl.
